Frequently asked questions

How will an AFS exchange effect my tertiary education?

AFS programmes in Malaysia are supported by the Malaysia Ministry of Education. If you have been offered to continue your education in Form 6, AFS Malaysia will be able to help you to request for deferment. Most of the returnees continue their studies at the local universities and colleges upon returning home. If you need to request for deferment, AFS Malaysia will be able to assist you with the supporting documents. However, the final result lies with the institutions. From our previous experience, our students do not have problems to enroll in private and local universities such as International Islamic University and University Technology of MARA.

I don’t have any money and my parents can’t pay the entire programme fee. Can AFS help?

AFS provides scholarships and advice on fundraising (see the section on scholarship)

I’m not an A student. Do I need top marks to go overseas with AFS?

You don’t need to be the top kid in school to go on AFS. Your average marks should be should be around 50% and above, with no failing grades. Although there are a few countries that require high academic levels. More important than grades is having the right qualities such as flexibility, self-confidence and ability to mix with others.

During the programme, Will I be able to return to Malaysia for matriculation and scholarship interviews?

NO, You are not allowed to return to Malaysia for matriculation and scholarship interviews while on the programme especially if you are a recipient of one of our scholarships. Students are encouraged to think carefully before deciding to go on AFS programs.

I don’t have much foreign language experience. Is that a barrier to going to school in another country?

Many AFS’ers start off with little or no foreign language experience. There’s no better way to learn a language than being immersed in it 24/7. You’ll learn more in the time you’re away than several years of language learning at school.
After six months to a year you should be (mostly) fluent. Just think how many more people in the world you’ll be able to communicate with and the job opportunities you’ll be able to get when you know another language!

Will I be exempted from National Service if I go on AFS programme?

No.

What can I expect when I get to my host country?

When you first arrive, you’ll participate in an orientation to help you get used to your new country, and to introduce you to other AFSers. Then you’ll meet your host family, who will provide you with the same care they give their own children. Expect to go through some adjustments as you get used to a new family, a new language and new customs. You will have the support of local AFS volunteers and staff, especially while you are adjusting.

How is AFS Malaysia structured?

There are 11 ‘chapters’ of AFS volunteers throughout Malaysia, made up mainly of current and former AFS participants and families. You and your family will have a lot of contact with your chapter, from selection to your return, including support for your parents while you are away, and readjustment on you return.

Students with physical disability

Students with physical disability are encouraged to apply for the Youth Exchange & Study (YES) programme to the US. Previously, AFS Malaysia had sent 9 phyiscally disabled students on the programme.

Does my family have to host?

We encourage your family to have their own intercultural experience experience by hosting an AFS student whilst you are away or become a liaison family.

-NO drugs
-NO driving
-NO hitchhiking
-Regular school attendance

There may be additional rules that are county-specific. There are also limits on traveling independently. In a new environment, it’s important to be more cautious than you might be at home.
